My last post is looking awfully sad in the wake of Saturday's nightmare of a game. The mystical, magical force field that seemed to protect Owen Field with a Hogwarts-esque enchantment was broken by, of all teams, the Fighting Hamburglars.
I could go on and on about how horrendous our team looked in every single phase of the game, and had I written this in the day or two following the game, I probably would have, in painstakingly hyperbolic detail and a with heavy dose of vitriol. But time and a record-setting rushing performance by one Demarco Murray heals Sooner wounds, and I'm looking towards the rest of the season with a modicum of hopefulness.
Here's how I see it- while that game laid bare some of the weaknesses we've managed to, well, manage through the first half of the season, this performance was uncharacteristic of this Sooner team, who has performed at a much, much higher level, and I believe still will.
Technically, the #chasefor8 is not at an end. Let's take a look at the BCS Top 10.
1. LSU
2. Alabama
3. Oklahoma State
4. Boise State
5. Clemson
6. Stanford
7. Oregon
8. Kansas State
9. Oklahoma (phew!)
10. Arkansas
There's still an outside chance we crack that all-important top two with a little help from our frenemies. Pretty much all of the unbeatens are beatable. Two of them- K. State and Okie State are directly within our control. LSU and Alabama's epic November 5th matchup will produce a loss for one of those teams. The rest all either a) play teams that could/should beat them or b)would potentially get jumped by an OU team that wins out (Boise, 1-loss Oregon). What sickens me is that I have to root for Tech and Oklahoma State to play well so that our loss doesn't look so bad and our (hopeful) win looks very impressive.
Insurmountable? Some may say so. But hey, much weirder things have happened in college football, often to our favor. And it makes so many more national games compelling to our interest. Yes, I'm pumping some serious sunshine right now. And it may be all for naught. But I believe that rather than fold in disappointment, my Sooners will rise to the occasion and play like the team we know they can be.
And in a random closing, thought I would just like to point out the hilarious juxtaposition of two celebrity stories today. Tony Romo announced that he and his wife are expecting a baby. On this very same day, his ex-woman Jessica Simpson announces that her feet cannot reach the floor of the Bergdorf's bathroom while she sits on the toilet by tweeting a picture of her dangling feet under the stall! Stay classy, Jess. And be looking out for more delicious blog goodness tomorrow, when we'll delve into that other little sport going on around Dallas these days... baseball! Stay tuned.
