I think I'm living at the North Pole

It's been a crazy couple of days- we've had half an inch of ice, five inches of snow, power outages- the works! This Dallas native is not used to this kind of weather. This is NOT normal- this is Norman! So in honor of the cold weather, my love for the Pants on the Ground song, and my present cabin fever, I give you my mini-parody, "Snow on the Ground."

Snow on the ground, snow on the ground.
Lookin' pretty cool with the snow on the ground.
Power goin' out, trees turned sideways, ice hits the ground.
Get yourself a warm hat don't be a fool... walkin 'round town 'cuz there's snow on the ground!

Awards Shows, Part Deux

Another day, another awaaaaaards showwww! Am I excited? In the words of Fake Sarah Palin, aka, Tina Fey, "You betcha!" The SAG (Screen Actor's Guild) Awards aired last night, providing yet another platform for which I could judge people for their wardrobe!

It was so nice to see a sunny day for the show... the rain at the Globes kind of made everyone look a little dowdy. Unfortunately, for this show, many gown-wearers managed to do that to themselves. Everyone managed to stave off the 'ugly' pretty well for the Globes, but man, did it come back with a vengeance for the SAG Awards!

This time, I'm going to break down my thoughts more thematically rather than best and worst. It may be a little disjointed, but I believe it is justified by the hot messes that passed before my eyes!

We've seen it all before...

Kate Hudson, what's up with all the white? White statement dress is not the new LBD, you can't just wear it for everything! She looks great in the color, but this dress just has a very straight jacket quality that I can't get past. And COME ON... extremely high neckline... suprise ultra-deep cutout in the back? Hilary Swank 2005 Oscars, anyone?

Diane Kruger looked stunning, especially compared to her Globe's fiasco of a look. She looked so statuesqe and beautiful. And the color was such a shock! Oh wait... not so much... remember Michelle Williams a la 2006 Oscars? It was definitely deja vu at first take due to the color issue, but it truly was a beautiful dress and she looked fabulous!

Padawans and Jedi Masters
Sit back young guns and watch how the vets do it!

Marion Cotillard was a knockout in this outfit! The feathery bottom paired against the structured, asymmetrical top looked so fresh! Katrina Bowden looked a little too avian in her dress. The feathery pieces are too long- she looks as though she is molting. It is a cute idea of a dress, so I must give props for daring to wear it!

Christina Applegate is sooo cute always, but I especially like this dress. The color is outstanding, and it is draped just beautifully and flatters her nicely! I also love Dianna Agron, but I feel the draping on the top ends up looking a little awkward. I see the nod to sculpture, but the asymmetry just keeps leaving my eye confused. Again, props for trying something different. It is nice overall.

Hot Mess Fest

Ladies, I know the Globes were a bummer with the rain, but it is still January and this is still a classy awards show. Leave the beach-maxi-dress-wannabe-wear at home!

Yoikes, Drew! That dress is just. awful. It reminds me of lampshades in a very distinct way. That, plus horrible bouffant hair and lack of makeup equals disaster! But I have to say- finally a look that went all the way bad, so at least it was interesting!

Lovely Ladies

Lea Michelle looks so stunning. I literally gasped when I saw her! The color is bold and great, and she just works it as an entire look! Rachel Berry never looked so good!

Kyra Sedgwick is always so adorable! She and Kevin Bacon just make the sweetest couple. Enough about that- this dress is simply pretty. The little bit of draping across the bust and waist keep it fresh and unexpected. Love it!

Tina Fey! You brought it, girl. This dress is a million times better than the Golden Globes dress. The color is just so excellent. The cut is fairly flattering and interesting as well. Way to to turn it around!

I could go on and on, but I should probably close this out. One final thought... the kid who plays Manny on Modern Family was adorable on the red carpet! Despite his precocious character, he is just a normal kid from College Station, TX. He just does an amazing job playing what he calls "just a character." Coolest kid!

NFC! NFC!

Nfc-championship2005.gif

Ok get excited time- The Complete Idiot's Guide to Understanding Football Like a Pro finally came in the mail today! I know what you're thinking, "Simone, in your infinite wisdom, don't you already know everything about football?!" Not even. I can't wait to learn more about the x's and o's of the game. It's going to be great!

Anywho, onto the only football action going on- the NFL Playoffs! Some of my favorite times growing up were watching America's Team (aka the Dallas Cowboys) dominate the 90's. We would have super bowl "parties" complete with skittles and getting to eat tons of junk food in the living room! Ah, those were simpler times.

Unfortunately, after getting completely dominated in the 2nd week of the playoffs, the 'Boys are dunzo. I do have to say props for finally getting a playoff 'W,' though- we hadn't won a playoff game since I was 9 years old!

Now, I am just hoping for an NFC win in the Super Bowl. Here is why:
  1. Conference loyalty. I probably wouldn't root for the Eagles or the Giants, but I'm sick of hearing about the almighty AFC conference. It's like cheering for the Big XII (I'm a huge Sooner fan), I'm not going to pull for Texas, but I cheer for the success of the rest of the conference.
  2. Phil Loadholt and AD (not AP, get it right)! I've got Sooner love for the Vikings.
  3. Brett Favre. I've been critical of his retiring/un-retiring antics, but give it up to the MAN! He is an incredible competitor, and is so fun to watch. He makes the sport great.
  4. I love to see the emotion of sports. It doesn't get much better than this
  5. How can you not like the Saints? I feel like the represent resilience for New Orleans.
So let's go NFC! I'm of course pulling for the Vikings, but I'll be happy either way. One final note, I saw no problem with the allegedly "classless" final touchdown by the Vikings against the Cowboys. The Vikings had a week off and they needed to play a full 60 minutes of football. It's the PLAYOFFS! Not to mention, it's the NFL- these are grown men getting paid millions of dollars- how sensitive do we really need to be to them? I heard it put this way by several different talking heads and I think it's so true- if the Cowboys didn't want to get scored on, they should have manned up and stopped it from happening. Sigh. I guess there's always next year for the 'Boys.

I would like to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press...

I love awards shows for everything- the speeches filled with raw emotion, and most of all the red carpet! Sadly, I missed most of the ceremony and red carpet footage due to work, and I missed the re-air this morning. So most of what I have to go off of at this point is still photos, which don't do the dresses justice (you have to see the movement of them!).

Ok, where to start!?! I have so much to say, but I'll try to keep it condensed down to blog-length appropriateness (doubtful). God must really want us to know that times are tough in America right now... seriously when was the last time it rained on the Golden Globes, or really ever in L.A.? I guess with that in mind, you can't say too much about hairstyles. They were all pretty boring, anyway... I didn't really see anything new or exciting in that dept. I will say Jen Garner's hair made her look uncharacteristically matronly. Anywho, on we go to the clothing!

The Men

I never know why the fashion critics spend any time critiquing the men. As long as they have a decent-fitting suit that isn't in crazy colors, does anyone really care? One note I want to make is that Cory Monteith aka Finn from Glee looked exceptional, especially for a first timer! Also, I think Taylor Lautner was the token out-of-place tween idol for this year's Globes. I don't know that taking off your shirt and sometimes looking pensive should put you in the same room as a man who made has made 2 of the highest-grossing films of all time, but then this is all just opinion anyways.

Worst of the Women
My roommate and I were discussing, and there really weren't any shockingly bad outfits- disappointing! That shock value is half the fun. So when they got it wrong this year, it was only a mediocre wrong, which may actually be worse...

Drew Barrymore's dress could have been really modern and pretty. I liked the crazy shoulder thing, but the similar mess on the hip killed it. They looked like those plants on Pandora that would pop up and down. And the rain did no favors to that already translucent dress.

Vanessa Minnillo always manages to look like a pageant girl, and she's not even really famous. Annoying. I'm not even going to talk about Mariah Carey. What a mess... pull it together, Mimi!

Diane Kruger's dress looked like the color got washed down it in the rain. It was awkwardly voluminous on top, yet the bottom had no shape. Yuck yuck yuck.

I think the very worst was Tina Fey. She did her very petite frame no favors at all, and she looked like one of those cupcake dolls my sister and I used to play with.

You went and saved the best for last
Yes I did, Vanessa Williams. There were a lot of really great dresses this year. I will narrow it down as best as I can.

Glee cast ROCKED it! They all looked just fantastic and overjoyed at being there/winning to boot! Check them out in the vid below post-win. Dianna Agron (Quinn, above) was absolute perfection. The metallic color was perfect, and the draping was so pretty!

I have no idea who Missy Yager is, but her dress was so pretty! The color was lovely, and the simple Grecian silhouette was awesome.

Props to Maggie Gyllenhaal. I NEVER like what she wears but she looked really feminine and great. The mermaid shape did her well.

Kate Hudson had weird shoes but that structured dress in white looked really fierce, even in the rain!

I don't care if it is borderline age-inappropriate to go strapless in your 60's, Glenn Close looks amazing! It's shimmery but still classic-looking. You go, Glenn CloClo!

Honorable mention goes to: Zoe Saldana and Toni Collette with great hair/makeup, and Ginnifer Goodwin, Olivia Wilde, and Anna Kendrick for edgy looks!

I cannot wait for Fashion Police to air, with the exception of the fact that Joan Rivers is going to be on it, ugh. And Giuliana Rancic... man did she have some bad interviews, not to mention that futuristic metallic dress...ick. But beyond that rant, I can't wait to compare my picks to those on Fashion Police.

To paraphrase James Cameron, I'm getting the wrap-it-up signal. Can't wait to see what we get for the Oscars. Should be pretty fun! Football talk to come!

Miley Put a Ring on It?

I woke up this morning searching for blogspiration (inspiration for my blog *note: I love to make up words that do not actually exist), as I'm still figuring out this blogging thing. Lo and behold, like a purity ring-encased gift from above, Miley delivered without fail.

The rumor du jour is that Miley is engaged to co-star/bf Liam Hemsworth. Last time I checked, aren't you 17, Miley? Are you really ready to trade in the ice cream (stripper) pole for a Baby Bjorn? Look to fellow Disney startup and cautionary tale B. Spears. At least we already know you can rock a wig, so you'll do ok in the shaved head department. But when you stage your inevitable comeback in 2015, people will comment under their breath that those now-legal hips aren't quite movin' like 'yeah' anymore.

And c'mon, what will you have in common with Demi and Selena after you take the big plunge? These psuedo-friendships appear forced-at-best as it is. Much as you think you are ready, the world is not ready for you to live that Disney persona behind. I still hold out hope for you and golden boy Nick Jonas. Your coupling was like that of a young JT and B. Spears. I always had a theory that their union was the lynchpin to world peace, but now I see that I was so very short-sighted. Take one for the team, Miley. Your planet needs you.

What's so great about this "Liam" guy anyways? I mean, he's tearing away your joy- 140 characters at a time! He isn't even American- Party in the USA is starting to feel like a lie. You don't know even know a Jay-Z song, are you next going to tell us that sometimes you wear stilettos!? I don't even know you anymore Miley Cyrus/Stewart/Montana/Hemsworth!?!

Ok, so apparently reps are denying it, but there's no denying that there's a ring on that "put a ring on it" finger. I guess only time will tell, but Miley, consider yourself warned.

This is not a diary.

Nope, that kind of thing is too introspective and emotionally self-indulgent for this heart of stone. And diaries are meant just for one’s self- i’m hoping that some people might actually read this thing!

I’m going to write about sports, pop-culture, and things that tweens and probably not 20-somethings should enjoy. The sort of things I’d love to get paid to write about (shout-out to all the pr/writer-needing companies out there!), but I guess this will have to suffice!

As a closing thought for my very first post, and to hopefully set the tone for what you can expect from this blog, I leave you with this inspirational quote:

Party in the USA.”- Miley (Destiny Hope) Cyrus
